Autumn 2024
All of us exist in a corporeal world, and it is understandable that our primary focus in anything we do, has to do with the organic body and how it feels and reacts.
We feed this body, and we nurture (and sometimes spoil) it by giving in to its demands.
There are of course, demands which cannot be ignored- such as cold, hunger and thirst.
These are the curse of all organic carbon based beings and must be satisfied but in the understanding and control of these needs is a clue how to derive discipline and structure in one’s life.
Then there are many other demands that our bodies make of us, some of which are inimical to our well being – whether physical or mental, and which should be understood, seen for what they are and controlled.
These would include ones that you are familiar with – ego, pride, Arrogance, AND ALL THEIR SISTERS.
Let these have their say, and you and your martial arts are lost.
Thus, it is important to take a holistic view of our beings – take the physical with the mental aspects of our living styles.
Breath correctly, eat in accordance with needs and the seasons and rest at appropriate times to replenish energy without becoming slothful.
Our Art is more than teaching how to strike and block and how to manipulate weapons.
Each of those are in fact a reflection of our usage of our personal energy. Whether we are able to do so efficiently and with grace and beauty is what dictates good Kung Fu.
Chinese Martial Arts and Science teaches those of us with a sound Mind, the WAY to exist and to use what we have been given for the time that we have been given.
Often it takes a life time to learn about this. Sometimes some of us will never learn it.
Which one are you?
